Dr. Donovan specializes in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of repetitive stress injuries with the goal of correcting abnormal postures and movement patterns. He uses a holistic approach to help patients overcome pain and physical limitations that incorporates Diet, Rest, Exercise,Alignment and Mindfulness (D.R.E.A.M.).

Dr. Donovan discovered chiropractic after he himself was treated for an old soccer injury. The treatments quickly resolved the elbow and neck injuries that had bothered him throughout college. After receiving his Bachelors of Science degree from Northeastern University, Dr. Donovan returned to California and attended Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1998. His residency in Chiropractic was performed at the Life West Public Clinic and at a private clinic in Oakland. He has worked in group practice in South San Francisco before starting his own practice in San Mateo. In 2002 he merged his practice with Dr. Mark Cleaners practice in downtown San Mateo. In addition to traditional chiropractic techniques, Dr. Donovan is A.R.T. certified.

A.R.T. is an effective movement based soft tissue technique that resolves problems with muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be helped quickly and permanently with A.R.T.

The addition of this technique has helped patients improve more rapidly and has been extremely successful in helping patients with extremity injuries.

Dr. Donovan is a San Mateo native. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his family: Kathryn and daughters Maya (6 years old) and Halle (4 years old). He likes to camp, backpack, hike, cycle, garden, travel, and can be somewhat fanatical about soccer. His private practice is at 700 South Claremont Street Suite #111 between 5th and 9th avenues in downtown San Mateo. He is certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the California State Chiropractic Board. Dr. Donovan is a Work Injury Prevention Specialist for Future Industrial Technology.

What to Expect On Your First Visit

Brief Paperwork
Before making an appointment, it's helpful to have your medical history and a description of any symptoms you may be experiencing. Upon entering the office, we have some brief paperwork for you to fill out. The paperwork provides us with general information about yourself and your condition. Call our office and we will gladly fax it or mail it to you.

History & Examination
In order to determine what your actual problem is, the doctor will ask you various questions related to your condition. Next, a number of specialized tests will be performed to determine which tissues are affected and to what extent.

X-Ray Studies
Your specific condition may require us to take x-rays to either rule out more serious conditions or assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you.

Treatment
Once finished with the examination and all appropriate studies, patients will, upon request, be provided with their first treatment during this same visit, but normally first treatment is provided after the report of findings. This is when the doctor reviews all the information of your case with you including your x-rays and the examination findings and lays out a treatment plan. The treatment consists of spinal adjustments, physical therapies, and/or soft tissue therapies.

Home Instructions
Prior to leaving, patients will be given instructions on certain activities or procedures to be conducted at home. These may include ice or heat application instructions, avoidance of certain activities or positions, as well as home exercises and stretches.

Set Your Visit Schedule
You will be given a convenient appointment time for your follow-up visit. Generally speaking, patients are seen the next day and are provided with a complete report of findings outlined above. The treatment options for your condition will also be discussed during this time.
