What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic was founded in 1895. It is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. The brain and the spinal cord are protected by bones, the skull, and vertebra. When the vertebra lose their normal position or move improperly, they can irritate the nervous system. The irritation can effect the nerves which supply the tissues and organs causing a lack of function. This lack of function is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Chiropractors locate and correct the areas of the spine not functioning properly. The correction is done through a procedure called an adjustment. The word adjustment describes a specific movement that is directed with careful pressure. This pressure allows the vertebra to return to a more normal position and movement. Doctors of Chiropractic go through a four year graduate program after completing medical school prerequisites. The training teaches Chiropractors how to use just the right amount of pressure at the proper time. This process makes Chiropractic an art. The philosophy of Chiropractic states that the body has an inborn ability to heal itself. By correcting Vertebral Subluxations through the adjustment, the nervous system can work properly to allow the body to heal. The doctor doesnÕt "heal" your body, only you can heal your body. Many medications, including aspirin, donÕt correct your problem, but only cover up your symptoms. Therefore, Chiropractic is not just a science, but also an art and philosophy. Chiropractors look to correct the cause of your problem.

What can I expect on my first visit to a Chiropractor?

Once you go to the Chiropractor, do you have to go the rest of your life?

We teach you how to take care of yourself so you can maintain your health with the least amount of professional intervention. Even though I haven't had a dental problem in 10 years, my dentist keeps me coming back for checkups. Chiropractors fix problems and then do our best to keep new ones from developing. Chiropractic is excellent at helping people recover from injuries, but it is also a great form of preventive care. Even when you feel great, an occasional checkup keeps you functioning at your best and prevents small problems turning into big ones.

Does chiropractic hurt?

If the area involved is sensitive, the point of the body that we adjust can be sore for a moment. Usually, people with acute conditions feel relief within minutes of their adjustment. Most often there is no pain whatsoever, and most patients look forward to their adjustments.

How long does it take?

The initial exam takes about 1 1/2 hours. Each treatment takes about 20 minutes. Each visit you will receive your adjustment, traction and deep tissue massage or myofascial release. This three-pronged approach has proven effective in providing long lasting relief.

How many visits does it take?

This depends on your particular condition. However, the national average is nine visits. Dr. Donovan will better be able to predict how many visits are necessary after your first examination.

Is chiropractic safe?

A recent study concluded that injury related to chiropractic adjustment was less than 1.25 incidents per million treatments. It is interesting to note serious complications from aspirin ingestion were 3,000 per one million patients. Chiropractic was deemed one of the most conservative forms of intervention available today.

How much does it cost?

Our exam runs from $50 to $105 depending on the complexity of your case. X-rays vary depending on what films are necessary. There is no charge for Dr. Donovan to either consult with you or to present his findings once an examination has been performed. Individual visits run from $30 to $55 dollars depending on the severity of your case. If your insurance does not cover chiropractic, we have a payment plan that is within most people's budget.

What is the Education of a Chiropractor?

As with any school of advanced learning, pre-requisites, that is, subjects required before admission, are needed for chiropractic college. Entrance into a chiropractic college requires at least two years college undergraduate work (Associate Degree) with credits in biology, chemistry and other "premed" subjects. The exact pre-requisites vary slightly from college to college. Chiropractic colleges are generally four year institutions. Approximately 25% of chiropractic school graduates are women, with that percentage steadily growing. In addition to classroom work, training includes an internship period where student chiropractors take care of patients under the supervision of chiropractic instructors, and an externship period where students may assist field chiropractors in their offices. The majority of the school work, however, is done in the classroom and the laboratories.

How does Chiropractic Compare to Medical Education?

A lot of people ask how chiropractic education compares to medical education. Since both work with the human body, there is much similarity in their studies -- but there are important differences as well. The chart on this page compares medical and chiropractic education. It was compiled from a review of the curriculum catalogues of 22 medical schools and 11 chiropractic colleges and updates from the National Health Federation Bulletin. After graduation the new chiropractor must pass license exams in the states in which he or she wishes to practice and/or a 4th National Board Examination. Each state has its own licensing laws and licensing examinations.
